The Black Beacon

a story about the different beacons lighthouses use

We lighthouse keepers are a mysterious lot. We have many beacons for many situations.

The red beacon of danger says “STAY AWAY” to ships that might run aground prematurely.

The yellow beacon of welcome says “COME CLOSE” to the ships we are ready to take in.

Today, for the first time, each of us prepares to light our black beacon.

“TIME TO COME ASHORE,” it says.

Not to the ships at sea, no, but to the fleet we have been collecting beneath the waves for centuries.
