He built a ray gun to shrink down the things that intimidated him. New friends, enemies, commitments, threats, risks, expectations—with a crackle-hum, they became as small as toys. Before long, he had shrunk down everything around him and made his life a playland so petty he could crush anything that made him feel small. If you ever see him sitting alone in his kingdom of tiny troubles, do not approach. You may feel tempted to remind him of how big the world truly is, but he will simply squint at you, see a giant on the borders of his realm, and reach for his gun.
