As a child, I was afraid of being alone in the dark. I tried to be so careful. Always carry a flashlight. Know where the batteries are. Stash candles for emergencies. Then one day, while I was in the cellar looking for fresh batteries, the power went out. I began to tremble, panic erupting from deep in my chest. The only sound was my breath, fast and ragged. I grew dizzy, eyes straining for shapes in the swimming black. And then the darkness grew hands to hold me. “There there,” it said, wrapping arms around me. Today, I am no longer afraid of being alone in the dark. I know how much worse it is for the dark to keep you company.
