The pale-skinned girl peered into the water, watching for mermaids. She saw her reflection and decided she had spotted one. All mermaids must look like that, like pale-skinned girls. She went back to shore imagining a sea full of creatures who all looked exactly like her. Meanwhile, below the waves, schools of shimmering merpeople swam unnoticed, their scales flashing every colour of sunlight breaking on water, their skin reflecting every shade of the ocean from fishbelly to deep trench. They, too, had been watching. They had seen a human child who mistook its reflection for a sea full of creatures, and they came to a very different conclusion. Everyone up there could be kind of an idiot.
