She walked into town with the storm at her back and trouble following at her heels. We gave her a cup of coffee and a toasted poppy-seed bagel. She smiled, thanked us, and headed off down the road. We’re trying to ignore the sounds emerging from the next town over. I guess they were out of bagels. Kari Maaren is a writer, cartoonist, musician, and academic whose first novel, Weave a Circle Round, was published by Tor Books in 2017. She has a completed webcomic, West of Bathurst, and an active one, It Never Rains. She is fond of time travel.
